Two Bhutanese killed in Bangalore motorbike accident

19 August: Two Bhutanese students, a 25-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were killed on the spot in Bangalore, when the motorcycle they were riding collided head on with a Tata truck, a vehicle similar to the Tata sumo. The incident occurred on Monday at around 1:25 am on the Bangalore-Mysore highway, about 70 km away from the city, said a final year student, Jamyang Namgyal. Dagachhu Hydropower Project construction

August 18: The construction of the 114 Megawatt Dagachhu Hydropower Project in Dagana is set to begin in October this year. The 200 million dollar project was scheduled to start in January this year. The Dagachhu Hydropower Project was delayed by ten months. The delay was caused by the disqualification of the Maytas Infra. The parent company of Maytas Infra, Satyam, was involved in a corrupt deal in India. The contract has now been awarded to Hindustan Construction Company, the second lowest bidder. Japan enhances BBS ability to broadcast live

18 August: The Bhutan broadcasting service corporation (BBS) yesterday received equipment worth Nu 300 million from the Japanese government under the grant aid, “Project for the improvement of equipment of BBS”. The grant includes the most expensive van, equipped with cameras, satellite and sound system (satellite news gathering (SNG) van) that will enable live coverage of news and programmes costing around Nu 150m. Japan Non Project Grant Aid for farm mechanization

August 18: To promote farm mechanization, the Japanese government will be giving a Non Project Grant Aid beginning this year. Japanese and Bhutanese officials met in the capital today to discuss the grant. The grant will further boost the KR-II grant which supports farm mechanization. Swine flu tests on rise

17 August: The number of people getting themselves tested for influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) has increased to an average of 35 a day from 10 a month in mid July, say public health laboratory officials. “Since the first confirmed cases in Bhutan were detected on July 20, a lot more people are getting themselves tested,” said the head of public health laboratory, Sonam Wangchuk. Formalising the Council

16 August: The recently appointed royal education council (REC) members, led by the prime minister, decided yesterday that the council will be an independent academic organisation, which will be a think tank, research and information centre for education in Bhutan.
