September 16: Bhutan’s progressive promotion and continuous assessments in primary grades is an exemplary program that can be replicated in Laos, according to a high level delegation from the Laotian education ministry.

The delegation, which is in the country to learn about the teaching approaches in urban and rural schools in Bhutan, commended certain programmes of the Bhutanese education system.

“Laos, a developing country, can’t afford to have high repetition rates in schools, which costs the government a huge sum,” said the vice minister of education ministry, Sengdeuane Lachanthaboune.

She said that the continuous assessment system in Bhutanese schools provides opportunity for students to gain equal attention from teachers, as they are monitored on daily activities.

The delegates visited Rinchen Kuenphen PS and Jigme Namgyal LSS yesterday and found that Bhutan and Laos share a similar system of education in having pre-primary, primary and secondary stages. “The way of teaching and working of teachers was impressive,” Sengdeuane said.

She also said that it is important to motivate teachers by providing incentives, paying more to teachers serving in remote part of the countries and providing trainings during breaks to improve the quality of education.

The delegates will visit schools in Bumthang and the college of education in Paro to study the linkages of progressive promotion, teaching and learning process.

According to the secretary of examinations of Bhutan board of examination, Phub Rinchen, Bhutan and Laos will share and learn the best practices of education from each other.
